Splice

So, this is going to be a place to review movies I decided, because I watched one last night and yeah.
StatsMovie: Splice
Director: Vincenzo Natali
Genre: Science Fiction/Drama/Thriller
Rating: R (sci-fi violence, strong sexuality, nudity, rape, gore, and language)
Leading Man: Adrian Brody as Clive Nicoli
Leading Lady: Sarah Polley as Elsa Kast
Supporting Lady: Delphine Chaneac as 'Dren' (Also, Abigail Chu and child Dren)

Summery
Alright, so this story starts off with two young scientists, Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast. These two (who, for the record, are an unmarried couple who have been together at least seven years) scientists are part of a team of perhaps a dozen specially chosen scientists set on creating new species by genetically splicing various animals. The most successful result is a slug-like mass of flesh that through some curious defect can change genders, is armed with a barb and neurotoxins, and is extremely aggressive.

However, Nicoli and Kast are working behind the backs of the rest of the team, determined to create a hybrid spliced with human genetics. They accomplish this and create an embryo that grows at an alarming rate, aging days in a matter of minutes.

Long story short, they become attached to it and Kast names it 'Dren.' Though it can't talk, it continues aging and shows high intelligence along with a variety of adaptations (wing membranes, a barbed tail with neurotoxins, and amphibious lungs).

Opinions
Overall, I like the concept and execution, though it feels a tad bit rushed. The emotional depth and eventual strange love triangle between Kast, Nicoli, and Dren is a cool if not slightly disturbing twist. It repulses, but I found myself still caring. The ending however, was rushed and honestly not the best. Also, totally unnecessary amount of nudity. =L I'm not giving too much away, but wow...

Overall, I liked it, but wouldn't suggest it as a movie to watch with an immature or overly-sexual crowd. Good for thriller fans and sci-fi geeks. 3.5 stars I think.
